When someone tells you they have bipolar disorder, there are things you can say that are helpful and some that are not. Below are the things that are not:

  • Is it that time of the month?
  • Just snap out of it
  • I wish I was manic so I could get things done.

  • Don’t dwell on it
  • What is so hard about getting out of bed?
  • We all have our down days.
  • Like ______? (a famous person with the illness)
  • Cheer up
  • Man up
  • Everyone has something
  • Have you tried to commit suicide?
  • You just need to try harder
  • I think you are just looking for attention
  • Just shake it off
  • You are just looking for an excuse
  • It will pass
  • Calm down
  • You seem so normal
  • You’re just overreacting
  • Smile
  • What do you have to be depressed about?
  • You don’t seem sad
  • You have every reason to be happy
  • You don’t look depressed
  • It can’t be that bad.
  • Don’t be lazy
  • Just make a decision
  • Think positive
  • It could be worse
  • Compare what they are going through to someone you think has it worse
  • Who cares?
  • You only think about yourself
  • Everyone has problems
  • Have you tried prayer?
  • It’s in your head
  • It’s your fault.
  • You’re imagining things
  • Don’t be so selfish
  • Be grateful for what you have
  • It’s all in your head
  • Life’s Not Fair
